Protect yourself against fraud

Fraudsters are sending phishing emails and SMSes in an attempt to induce you into sharing your banking and personal details. Beware of fake statements, notifications or communications that require you to take an action like to click-on to a link or to download an attachment.

What are Phishing scams?

Phishing is when fraudsters send you unsolicited emails, in which they claim to be from a reliable organisation, like a financial institution or an email service provider.

How it works

  • You receive an email request to update or confirm your details by clicking on a link or an icon
  • Once you click on it, a fake website is launched
  • On the website, you are asked to share your account details, username or password for online banking, email account, cell phone number or bank card details
  • Any details you provide on the fake website are captured by the fraudsters and used to defraud you

Spotting phishing emails, SMSes or communication:

  • Scam emails, SMSes and communication often (but not always) look strange, with an untidy layout and spelling mistakes.
  • For security reasons, we may ask you to enter your ID number to open a statement we have sent you, but we will never ask you to enter your email address or any passwords you use for your banking app or internet banking.

How to prevent this type of fraud:

  • Make sure you use anti-virus software to protect your PC, laptop and mobile devices.
  • Hover over links sent to you, to check the sender’s identity (but do not click on it).
  • Be on the lookout for any strange links with numbers, hyphens, misspellings or sub-directories.
  • Search for the sender’s details and check that they are legitimate senders.
  • Be careful of any unexpected emails, SMSes or communication.
